How to Prepare Your Cat (and Your Home) Before You Go on Holiday

After hundreds of sitting visits across Luxembourg, I can tell you the difference between a relaxed cat and an anxious one usually comes down to preparation. Here's the checklist I wish every owner had before their first trip.

Two weeks before

• Book your sitter early. School holidays fill up fast — the meet & greet works best when it isn't rushed.
• Stock up. Count out food, litter and medication for the full trip, then add three extra days' worth. Flights get delayed; supplies shouldn't run out.
• Check ID. Make sure your cat's microchip details are up to date, and note your vet's contact details for your sitter.

The meet & greet

A good sitter will want to meet your cat before the first visit. Let your cat approach in their own time — don't force introductions. This is also the moment to walk through:

• Feeding routine, portion sizes and treat rules
• Litter box locations and cleaning preferences
• Hiding spots (every cat has a favourite!)
• Medication, allergies and vet information
• Wi-Fi-free zones — I mean, rooms that should stay closed

The day you leave

• Leave everything in its usual place — cats notice change more than we think.
• Put out an unwashed t-shirt or blanket that smells of you.
• Double-check windows, balcony doors and tumble dryers (yes, really).
• Resist the emotional goodbye. A calm, normal departure tells your cat everything is fine.

While you're away

Ask your sitter for photo updates — a good one sends them without being asked. And enjoy your trip: a cat in their own territory, with their routine intact and a kind visitor who plays and cuddles on their terms, is a happy cat.
